When her husband Ben jumped to his death in 1964, Rachel Gordon struggled to discover why. Why would a healthy man with a loving family and successful career decide to end his life? His second child was about to be born and he appeared to love his life. Why indeed?

Set during the tumultuous 1960s and 70s, the story follows Rachel's efforts to rebuild her life and career. Her quest for the truth about her husband's death leads to layers of intrigue, deception and danger, and eventually to the MKUltra Program. The book portrays Rachel's anguish and her determination to

The CIA eventually acknowledged the truth about the program that had its origins at the end of World War II when Nazi scientists were secretly brought into the United States. MKUltra expanded as the Cold War took hold and concerns about national security and the spread of communism grew. The CIA used a variety of techniques and substances in their experiments without disclosing the details or the risks to the subjects.

Many individuals who survived the experiments suffered permanent injuries. Because they were sworn to secrecy, most were unable to prove wrongdoing by officials running the program. It is remarkable that the truth about MKUltra ever became public. The CIA tried to destroy evidence of the program's existence, but details eventually became public after a leak to the New York Times.

This novel reveals the hard work of reporters and researchers who exposed the cover-ups. The author draws from evidence made public during subsequent Congressional hearings. What Rachel discovers through her journey for the truth changes the way she and her family accept the past and face the future. It also creates new challenges for her and for the nation.
