About the Book
Another messy and mundane memoir exploring what “normal” means for modern American families. A string of stories that are as bizarre as they are heartwarming, Beside My Doorstep follows Zola and her split-level family as they move from house to house over the course of twenty years. Being the only interracial family on the block, they use garlic instead of antibiotics, fight in a way that the Italian ancestors would be proud of, cringe during the holiday season, put Heineken in sippy-cups, narrowly escape numerous violent incidents in Barbados, is accused more than once of being involved in a drug cartel, leave the country when Mom becomes fed up with the American lifestyle, and doesn't apologize for any of it.
The narrative lens is that of a young girl from the midwest who not only writes her story of growing up, but elaborates on her parent’s eccentric past and how the history of their lives still lingers in the day-to-day.
Raw and genuine, Zola illustrates a profound mother-daughter relationship centering on the wild and persistent ghosts of her mother’s past- a deeply-rooted bond that is heavy and brilliant and constantly burning. Written by a young woman with an extraordinary talent for observation and compassion, Beside My Doorstep paints a picture that is both universal and deeply personal in its dysfunction, humor, tragedy, and discovery- all themes inherent in the storm of growing up.

Along with the text, Zola has also created an engaging multimedia aspect including videos that blend narration of the book's most poignant moments, music, and antique video footage. A handful of these videos can be found here: http://www.chloezola.com/video. Overall, Beside My Doorstep relates to readers from all walks of life. Its magic lies in Zola's use of language, her perspective of her family and the world and her ability to share it all with with the reader.
