Interview with Jeannie Walker

Indie Author News Interview - Jeannie Walker
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Jeannie Walker: I studied Creative Writing in New York and Connecticut.

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite book, and who or what are your writing influences?
Stephen King, Ann Rule, Dean Koontz, Margaret Mitchell - They and many other authors have influenced me greatly.

Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?
I try to sit down and write a little each day.

What do you find easiest about writing? What the hardest?
The easiest thing about writing is putting my words down on paper. The hardest thing is remembering the words I dreamed about the night before.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in high school.

Tell us a little about your first novel 'Fighting the Devil'.
My book is about a Texas Millionaire rancher who discovers his wife and bookkeeper have stolen thousands of dollars from him. He demands the money back, but suddenly gets deathly ill after eating lunch with his wife and bookkeeper.

He dies in the hospital from a mysterious and unknown illness that mystifies doctors. An anonymous caller notifies the police of arsenic poisoning.

The millionaire's ex-wife and mother of his only children becomes a sleuth to help solve his murder. A bottle of arsenic is found in a storage locker. I became a real-life Sherlock Holmes to trace this poison back to the murderer?

What inspired you to write the book?
People started asking me to write the book after they saw a documentary episode about the murder on TV.

Who do you see as your target audience and where can we buy the book?
Adults who love true crime thrillers.

How would you describe the success of your book? (Sales, Awards, Reviews)
My book was selected as 2010 Book of the Year True Crime Winner by ForeWord Magazine and 2011 True Crime Finalist by National Indie Excellence Awards.

What did you do to promote yourself and your book?
Taking part in radio shows, blogs, networking, and social media.

Please, tell us where you self-published the book.
Via Amazon CreateSpace.

How smooth went the self-publishing process? Any issues? What are things to look for when self-publishing a book?
Self-publishing is time consuming, but well worth the effort. Editing is very important and so is proofreading.

Did you hire an editor and/or Cover Designer for your book?
Yes, I hired an editor and Cover Designer for my book.

Can you give some tips for other Indie Authors regarding the writing and self-publishing process?
Take your time and get it right. Don't rush because haste makes waste. Take the first draft and pare it down by 10 percent, for a successful formula.

Are you working on another book project? Can you tell us a little about it?
I am working on my next true story. It is about my Cherokee Indian Grandmother and the sufferings of the Cherokee Indians on the Trail of Tears.

Are you planning to move forward as an Indie author or are you looking forward to have one of your next books to be traditionally published?
I am looking forward to being an Indie Author.

"I don't believe authors should sell their eBooks for 99 cents."

Where do you see the book market in 5 or 10 years? Will there be only 99cent eBooks or do you see this just as a marketing phase of the book sellers to move readers into the digital book market in a fight for future market shares?
I don't believe authors should sell their eBooks for 99 cents. But, that is just my person opinion for what it is worth

Do you write full-time or do you have a day job?
My day job is being a housewife to my marvelous husband. I try to write a little each day.

How can readers connect with you?
They can use the contact form on my website or via Twitter.

Thank you so much for the Interview, Jeannie. Good Luck with your future book projects.
