I'm releasing my debut novel, The Future of Our Past in the next couple of weeks and my sister suggested this site to me after she pledged for a cookbook author in the St. Louis area. It's a brilliant concept that makes it possible to reach your goals and dreams!
The site encourages people to pledge in return for a series of "rewards". You determine the amount of the pledges, what reward to assign each of them, the time line of your project and the goal amount. Rewards can and should be the actual thing you want to launch! In my case, I've offered signed copies of my book, ePub versions, merchandise, and personal interaction with me via telephone and Skype!
Kickstarter does keep a small percentage of the total and Amazon charges a very small fee to process the credit card pledges, so when you set up your rewards, make sure to include any money you'll need to fulfill the rewards, plus shipping and these fees!
Make it compelling! Add a video about your project, your personal bio and what you're going to use the funds to accomplish. Give potential backers a taste of what makes you and your project special!
The greatest thing about this is that there is no risk to the people backing your project! If your funding goal isn't met by the deadline you set, then none of your backers are charged for their pledge. It's an all or nothing proposition.
This is an incredible platform and opportunity, so take a flying leap and trust! I did!
